fact ‘intimidate and coerce' the Negro
eitizens of Wilcox County, through the
person of Lonnie Brown, for the purpose :
of interfering with their right to vote. "77
We hold that the Civil Rights Act of 1957 applies to
private persons, including the defendants impleaded in this
case. We hold that the Act applies to interfering with the
‘ yight to register as well as interfering with the right to
vote; that the Act protects Negro citizens .against the
coercion, intimidation, and violence the defendants admitted
or were proved to have committed in this case.
i¢} Phe Civil Rights Act _o: 1964. The '64 Act creates
new categories of civil rights and extends the authority of
the Attorney General te protect such rights by a civil suit
for injunctive relief against any persca, public or private.
