RE: RANDLE COZELL POUNDS,

advised on June 23, 1965, that "JELLY" POUNDS is the co-
ordinator of the klan units in the Bogalusa area.
Qn April 7, 1965, POUNDS allegedly attempted to
assault CORE worker WILLIAM JOHN YATES while YATES was
parked in the vicinity of the home of ROBERT HICKS,
Bogalusa, Louisiana. POUNDS allegedly struck the auto-
mobile of YATES with a biackjack while YATES was within
this automobile. YATES identified photographs of POUNDS
as being identical with the person who attempted to assault
him on the above date. Upon interview, POUNDS denied that
he was involved in this incident, Pertinent interviews
regarding this matter are included in this menorandun.
At approximately 9:30 AM, on April 9, 1965,
POUNDS assaulted JAMES L. FARMER, Executive Director, CORE,
at the intersection of Columbia Road and Third Street.
FARMER, at the time, was leading a procession of approxi-
mately 420 civil rights marchers. POUNDS walked up to
FARMER, grabbed him by the collar, and drew back his other
hand in which he held a blackjack. Appropriate interviews
with witnesses to this incident are included in this
menorandum.,
On July 19, 1965, at City Court of Bogalusa,
POUNDS pleaded guilty to committing an assault with a
dangerous weapon, to wit a blackjack, upon the person
of JAMES FARMER amd was fined $25.00 and costs or 30 days
in jail.
When interviewed January 11, 1965, and March 27,
1965, POUNDS denied being a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
These interviews are included in this memorandum.
