Violence and the Child’s Burden
The price which must be paid by the city which
attempts the solution of community problems by
violent means is almest beyond reckoning. This
price can be expressed in economic terms, through
individual business declines, Poorer fob oppor-
turdties, and loss of new or expanded industry for
the city; in medica! terms, through individual guf-
fering and adverse effects on the health of citizens;
in terms of loss of self-respect for both the city
and individual citizen.
One of the most serious consequences of vio-
lence ts its effect spon the children of the
community. Where parental guidance and civic
leadership fail, and violence Mares, the burden of
desegregation falls wpon the city’s children. They
are foreed te make adjustments which, without
help, often prove beyond their capacities. Lasting
@motional injury is the direct result. ;
