SHUT ©Hi bhi SF] so The Department of Justice furnished this Bureau with a copy of a letter dated December 4, 1946, from THURGOOD MARSHALL to THERON L. CAUDLE, assistant attorney general, Department of Justice, Washington, D. Cc. ‘In this letter Mr. MARSHALL related that he was in Columbia, Tennessee, o 46, and that date the trial o n as concluded. In this cennection it is noted that these two defendants DT ee ee wes ee oe oe es ee ee were charged with having been involved in the racial disturbances in Columbia, Tennessee, which occurred in MARSHALL related in his letter that olumbia to drive e, in the letter as being a reporter for the “Daily Worker." It is noted that the "Daily b7e Worker" is an East Coast communist publication, Mr. MARSHALL further related that the car which he was driving was stopped by local authorities, that he was arrested for iving while drunk and taken to the office ofi He stated tha: smelled his breath an en stated “this man isn drunk; he hasn't even had a drink". Mr. MARSHALL continued in his letter by stating that he was released and that he and his associates continued to Nashville. The Department of Justice requested that an investigation be conducted regarding this matter and during the course of investigation, the above mentioned constable in the trict of Columbia, Tennessee, was int wed. tated that it was his belief that wanted to get a "last crack" at ' and MARSHALL and was using as his instrument in accomplishing this.
