The “Washington Square Journal", a New York University | student newspaper, in its April 2, 1970,issue contained an article entitled “Hoffman, Dharuba Speak at Square Rally; Veweo Vass ven vey anu es Se sete Mw oe ~~ Saco ae ee | “| : 180 March on Med School, Disrupt Speech" which stated in : part as follows: ¥ ): “Abbie Hoffman of the Chicago 7 and Dharuba of the 7 Panther 21 led 500 students in a fervorous rally yesterday afternoon, demanding release of the imprisoned Panthers and radical reformation of the Bellevue Medical Center. { "Some 50 chanting and jeering radical students later carried their rally to the NYU Medical Center, where they caused the cancellation of a speech on biological warfare after police had kept 180 persons from entering the Medical School complex. oat awednr ee i "Staged at Washington Place between Greene and ; Mercer Streets, the 2 pm rally, closely scrutinized by mounted 4 police and officers atop the apartment building facing the congregation was sponsored by NYU-SDS, the Dec. 4 movement, and NYU radical medical students. . “Hoffman took the platform blowing his nose with a small American flag. ‘It's just Old Glory blowing in the wind, he explained. Hoffman then denounced the Columbia Broadcasting System for electronically blocking out his American flag shirt on the Merv Griffin Show. He also scored the network for refusing to cover a Black Panther press conference in Harlem. ~ "tr don't care what the (obscené) Supreme Court says,' Hoffman said. ‘They're a bunch of honky racists too. We're all a big conspiracy. They're not going to take us all. They're not going to put us all iin jail. All trials in America are political triais. All prisoners are political prisoners. ' "Nt Ninety per cent of the people in jail are black,' Hoffman said. ‘Ninety per cent are young. Ninety per cent haven't had a (obscene) trial.
