(‘NITED STATES DEPARTMENT YP JUSTICE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION In Reply, Please Refer to Miami, Florida File No. 19015903 March 19, 1971 RE: ABBOTT HOWARD HOFFMAN SECURITY MATTE? ~ AMARCHY ae ABBOTT HOFFMAN was indicted March 20, Bee 1969, for violation of Federal Ayti- a Riot Law for activity during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, HOFFMAN was found guilty and was sentenced to five yours imprisonment and fined $5,000, On February 28, 1970, the United States Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit, - Chicago, Illinois, ordered that he be released on $25,000 bond, pending appeal. ABBOTT HOFFMAN, on February 9, 1971, addressed the Dade Couaty Young Lawyers at a luncheon held at the McAllister Hotel, Miami, Florida. teen’ —) ED IAS LE wl RE In his address, HOFFMAN discussed free speech and stated it is not generally known but that he is banned in — -_ between fifteen and twenty states in the country, including : the “Slet state, Canada". In Canada, he had the unique distinction of being the only person deported twice, HOFFMAN stated that other than that, we have a system that is based . : on repressive tolerance, We have a free speech but there is a _ ct a “high glut". The average American is exposed to sixteen hundred commercials a day, and with such a system built on mass communication, the right of free assembly and free press —_—— has to be reedefined.
