S$ that the Students for a Democratic
Socicty (f > oS ssenuly regarded, came into being at a
founding convention held June, 1962, at Port Huron, Michigan.
From an initial posture of "participatary democracy” the line
of the national leadership has revealed & growing Marxist-
Leninist adherence which currently calls for the building of
@ révolutionsry youth movenent. Concurrently, the program of
SDS hos evolved from civil rights struggles to an anti-Victnan
yar stance to an advocacy of & militant antl-impcrielist position
Chine, Vietnam and Cubs are regurded as the leaders of vorldyvide
struggles against United States imperialism whereas the Soviet
Union is held to be revisionist and also imperialist.
At the June, 1969, SDS National Convention, Progressive
Labor Party (PLP) forces in the organiastion were expelled. As
a result, the listion.l Office (HO) group maintained its Hationsl
liczdquarters et 1605 West Hadison Street, Chicago, and the PoP
fection set up hésdquarte:s in Cowbridge, Massachusette. Tris
headgusrters sabscquently moved to Baston. Each group elected
its ovn nutionsl officers, which include three nations. seeretiri
and @ Eotiorm.1 Interim Committce of cight. Both groups siso. priv
their versions of "Rey Left Fotes" which sets forth the line aha
the program of the particular faction. The NO version of "Rew
Left Notes" was recently printed under the title "The Fire Next.
Time” tu achieve a broader mass appeal. .
Tuo major factions have developed internally within the
NO group, namely, the Weatherman or Revolutionary Youth Movenent
(RYM) I faction, and the RYM II faction. Weatherman is action-
oriented upholding Castro's position that the duty of revolution
aries is to rake reyolution, Veathermsn is regarded by RYH Te
ae on ndventuristic, elitist foetion which denies the historicen3
rolé of the working class 4s the bese for revolution. RY¥id It
mainteins thet revolution, although desired, is not possible
uncer presocnt conditions, hence emphasizes organizing and raisir
the political consciousness of the vorking class upon who thay
feel successful revolution dcpcuds. Although disclaiming contr
and dowination by the Commnist Party, USA, leaders in these bs
factions have in the past proclaimed themselves to be communist
and to Dllow the precepts of a Marxist-Leninist, philosophy, alo
