VI. INTERVIEW OF MR. ARNAUD DE BORCHGRAVE, SENIOR
EDITOR OF "NEWSWEEK"
On December 24, l957, the following interviews.
at "Newsweek" magazine, 152 West 42nd Street, New York City:
Mr. ARNAUD DE BAQCHGRAVE, Senior Editor, advised that
BENJAMIN BRADLEE, "Newsweek" Bureau, Washington, D,C., submitted
to him a press release which had been submitted to #Newsweek"
of October, l957. Mr. DE BORCHGRAVE advised that he had
never personally met FITZMAURICE but telephoned him in
Washington, D.C. He stated that from his conversation with.
the subject he was of the *impression" that WALTER FITZMAURICE
was hired by the subject to offset the unfavorable publicity
received by JO$E (PEPITO) LAUREL, JR. in tNewsweek" and other
publications prior to the Philippine National Elections.
Mr. DE BORCHGRAVE related that FITZMAURICE telephonical1y
i even though FITzMAURICE did so admit this employment,
FITzMAURICe stated he saw no need to register as a foreign
agent. It was also DE BORCHGRAVE's "impression" from his
telephonic contact with FITZMAURIce that' the latter was only.
hired by VALENCIA to perform such work until the Philippine
election on November 12, 1957.
VII. INTERVIEY OF RICHARD DAVIS, FORMER ACTING
CHIEF OF THE WIASHINGTCN BUREAU OF ANENSIEEK'
MAGAZINE
Mr. RICHARD DAVIS, Douglas Aircraft Company,.
Street, N.TI., Washington, D.C., adsised SA THEODORE N. GOBLE
on April ll, l958, that he was acquainted with the contact
made by NALTER FITZMAURICE and the subject with B2NJAMIN
BRADLEE of "Newsweek"magazine.
Mr. DAvis stated that in October, 1957, he was Acting
Chief of the Washington Bureau of "Newsweek" magazine. He
said that FITzMAURICE came to him during this time (exact date
not recalled) requesting to know who handled Philippine
matters for "Newsweek". Mr. DAVIS said that FITZMAURICE had
some mimeographed material with him which he claimed was a
good news story concerning the Philippine elections and the.
attempt of the Philippine Government to insure adequate news.
