FD-302(R.4-5-4 FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION 8/6/69 Date. York City Police Department, furnished the following informa-. tion when interviewed: A racial disturbance commenced in York, Pa.,. on July l7, l969. This was mainly a disturbance between A a result of the gang incidents, the police department attempted to seal off two areas of town. One of the areas was around the 30o block of South Penn Street which is predominantly a colored section. The other area was around North Newberry Street, north of West Philadelphia Street, which is predominantly a white section of town. On July 2l, l969, the department received informa-. tion that a colored woman nad been shot on North Newberry Straet at approximately 9:l5 p.m. The original information received was that she had been shot by a group of white individuals who resided in the area. b7C stated that his department is however, he is working with Tof'the Pennsylvania State Police in a joint investigation. He stated there were reports that on July 20, I959,"an automobile occupied by Negroes traveled through the Newberry Street area, and at one point,the trunk opened up. When the trunk opened, Negroes who had been concealed therein sprayed the area with gunfire as the vehicle spad off. He understands thera were white people wounded at this time; however, he has not been able to locate any reports of these injuries.
