LA 120-936 the body was lying and he called to her to call the Police and an ambulance. He said she waved acknowledgment and de- point, Mr. CARTER~stayed with the body while he tried to locate some flares in the trunk of their automobile. GILmAN said before he. could locate the flares, the. California Highway Patrol had arrived on the scene and took. over the situation. He said he noted that the Highway Patrol arrived at approximately 12:ll a.m. He said that a Patrolman's comment upon viewing the body was that he was an Indian student from -Sherman Institute; who was apparently taking a shortcut across the freeway, which is not uncommon. He said the PatroIman explained that there is a well-worn path and the fence is even mashed down from students crossing the free-- way rather than walking a quarter of a mile to a crossover road. GiLmAN said when they found the body, it was. positioned with the head being about two feet from the edge Of the freeway, feet extended toward the shoulder, laying on the macadam shoulder. He said their car traveled approxi- mately 200 to 250 feet past the point of impact before they. came to a stop.. GILmAN said the pedestrian seemed to lope or lurch. out in front of their car as if he either vaulted the center. divider or leaped from the center area directly in front of their car. He said it was so sudden that he ducked his head in a natural reflex upon impact.. GILmAN said the body was taken to the Riverside County Hospital by an ambulance, who arrived within a few GILmAN said one other thing he noted at the time of. their examining the pedestrian was a slight tinge of blood at his nostrils and the fact that his shirt and trousers were split open. GILMAN said there was no way of avoiding hitting. this individual.
