The subject of this case is carried as a'key figure
in the New York Field Division.

an autobiography of LANGsTON HUGHEs, and is summarized as.follows:
HuGhEs was born February l, l902 at Joplin, lissouri..
His early youth was spent in Lawrence, Kansas. In l9l6, he moved to Cleveland
.with his mother, shere he.remained until he had copleted his high school
education at Central High. In l920, he visited his father; sho was living
in Mexico, and stayed with him for approximately a year. In September of 1921,
he enrolled at Columbia University in New York, shere he completed a one year's

New York under the guidance of LUDIG LE ISOHN end HEYWOOD DROUN.
At thc end of the school year, he rent to sea, and from
that time until 1926, he drifted about in various countries of Europe, includ--
ing Italy, France, and Spain. He had begun to write poetry prior to his going
to sea. As a result of his talent in this field, he was given a scholarship
to attend Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He began his studies at this
school in l926, and completed his course there in three years.

that he had visited Russia in l933; and that he was a correspondent in Madrid,

Confidential Informant T-2 advised that one SOnyA SROLL,
with the alias JUE cROLL; a shite person, married LANGSTON HUGHES sometime
in l932, and they had a child.
In the Daily lorker, edition dated September l, l933, on
page 5, the subject is stated to have written an article entitled gloscow

a picture qelack and hite". He stated that he admired the Soviet system for
its non raca/prejudice, and he stated that all places were open to him as he
possessed credentials of the INTERLATIONAL UNION OF REVOLUTIONARY RITERS.
