Memorandum to Mr. McDermott
Re: REQUESTED EXAMINATION OF
UNIDENTIFIED HAIR FROM THE
BIGFOOT INFORMATION CENTER
AND EXHIBITION
THE DALLES, OREGON
This Atlas reported that "a sample of reputed
Sasguatch hair was analyzed by the FBI and found to belong
to no known animal.
Inasmuch as FBl Laboratory experts..
Dr. Steve Rice, Editor of the Army Atlas was telephonically
contacted in Seattle, Washington." .After. checking, Dr. Rice
was unable 'to locate his source of the reported FBr. hair'
examination.
By letter dated 8/26/76 'Mr. Peter: C.: Byrne.
Director,. The Bigfoot Information Center, and Exhibition,
The Dalles, Oregon, inquired whether this 'reported FBl hair
analysis was accurate.' In my letter dated 9/io/76 Mr. Byrne
was told the FBr Laboratory had no references,to such an
examination (copies 'attached).
By letter dated 11/24/76 Mx. Peter Byrne again
article dated 6/30/76 captioned, "Is it Bigfoot, Or. Can It Be.
Just A Hoax?" (attached). The article contained a history of
Bigfoot and the activities of Mr. Byrne and. others connected
with the mystery. Mr. Byrne's Ietter 'requested the FBI
Laboratory exanine and attempt to identify 15 hairs attached
to a piece 'of' skin..
According to the New York Times article,: Mr. Byrne's.
Applied Science (AAs),' Boston,. Massachusetts, admission fees
to his exhibit and small donations :from other sources. The
AAS is the chief sponsor of the current Loch Ness expedition
in Scotland. AAs is listed in the Encyclopedia of Associations

and engineering. It claims 300 members and one staff member.
