To get some idea of the nature of the researches being conducted by
the Institute, we examined a copy of Vol. IX of tho journal, *Studies in
Philosophy and Soeial Science," published in April, l94l, which is in two.
parts. One part contains artieles on mass communication by radio, one of
which is by Professor Paul F. Lasarsfeld of Columbia University's Office
of Radio Research wha is identified with the Institute, together with
reviews of books such as one by Herbert Marouae of John Dewey's #Theory
of Valuntion," two by Franz L. Neumnnn on Fdgar Bodenheimer's vork, "Juris-
prudence and on David W. Petegorsky's wbrk, *Left-ving Demoeracy in the
English Civil War," one by Henryk Grossman, member of the Institute on
historical and statisticsl anslyses of the capitalist process. The other
part contains, among others, an article by Frederick Pollock on "State Cap-.

In an effort to further develo the fact tht the Institute is a commun-
istic organization we looked into the character and activities of most of its
members. Two of whom Herbert Marouse and Frans L. Neumann) are in the
service of the Oss, and other persons whom we found to be identified with
it.
