Letter to Director intelligence reports fron an wmnamed agency. As an exhibit to the Counittee, he furnished letters from the Military Attache at the Anerican Eabassy, Madrid, Spain; letters from Jales F. Byrnes, Secre- tary of State, to Senator KEWErh S. WHERRy, and a letter from DONaLD RusseLl, Assistant Secretary of State, to Senator WHeany. He also furnished the Comrittee a memorandum which was captioned WFor the Military Attache at Havana" and signed SPRullLE BRADEN. He also furnished a report from the Assistant U. S. Filitary Attache in the Dominican Republic and an axcerpt from the book, myhy and Ho. I Left Defense Ninistry in the Intrigue of Russis and Spain," by INDALIcIo FRIErO, former Minister of Defense for the Spanish Republic cause. All of these documents ware to show DURaN'S background as a Conmunist. There is enclosed herewith the complete text of testimony by Senator ccarrhy to the Subcomnittee, together with the afore- mentioned axhibits concerning GUSTavo DURaN.. Senator MeCaRTHy then proceeded with his next case and furnished the nane of IR. HARLOw/SHAPLEy, a member of the U. S. National Caumission for Unesco, fone of the organizations of the . United Nations. He advised that DR. ShAPLey had participated in the Soviat Peace Conference and that his record with Coumrunist fronts is a long and interesting ons. There is enclosed herewith the couplete text of testimony furnished by Senator MecaRrhy to the Subcamnittee.. Senator MeCarthy then proceeded with his next case and furnished the Committee with the name of an individual which was not made public. He advised that Secretary ACheson had stated that ser perverts are considered to be poor security risks and that this case involved a person who had been employed by the State Department Foreign Service until l9l8, when he resigned. H. stated that this individual had a record with the Metropolitan M Police Department as a pervert, that he was known to have boen 1 . hanger out at Lafayette Park in Nashington, D. C., and that during September l943, was arrested as a pervert, at which time he elected to forfeit $25.00. Senator McCarrHI advised that thi. individual is now euployed by CIa, receiving fron $l0,ooo.00 to $12,000.00 per annw. 121-0 b1c
