INFORMATION CONCERNING MARION S. BARRY, JR.,
MAYOR OF WASHINGTON, D.C.,
PRELIMINARY INQUIRY
POSSIBLE OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE
As you will recall, the Department, by letter. dated
:10/12/84, requested that the FBI conduct a preliminary inquiry
into the possible unauthorized disclosure to the' press of
information protected by Rule 6(e) of the Federal Rules of
Criminal Procedure relating to a Federal grand jury inyestigation
involving .officials of the~District of Columbia, including.
Mayor Marion S. Barry, Jr. The FBI was specifically requested
to determine the number of individuals who had access to this
information, their names, and the extent of their contact with
. the information at issue..
By letter dated 12/19/84, our findings were provided
to the Department for review. On 5/7/85, a representative of
the Department's. Office of Professional Responsibility advised
a representative of the White Collar Crimes Section, Criminal
Investigative Division, that after giving careful consideration
to this matter, no additional investigation would be requested

and the matter was considered closed." The Department plans
