STOLEN PROPERTY

This is to advise that the' Department is considering
allowing defense counsel, in a civil action, to read certain Interview
a close friend of President Nixon.
This is the case in which t, 500 shares of IBm stock we
stolen from a New York brokerage house in 1968. Nine hundred shares
of this stock were pledged for a loan in the summer of 1968, at the
Pank of Key Biscayne, Florida. Rebozo, the president of this bank,
personally handled this loan.. Our investigation established that
Mr: Rebozo conducted considerable investigation concerning the
borrower and the authenticity of the stock before granting the loan.
This included contact with the brokerage house from which the stock.
ORIGINAL FILED IN
was stolen, and contact with IBM to have the stock reissued in the
name of the borrower. It was subsequent to all of this activity that
the New York brokerage house discovered that the stock was stolen.
The Bank of Key Biscayne, Rebozo, and the borrower, Charles L. Lewis,
are defendants in a civil suit brought by the insurance company of
the brokerage house to recover the vahe of the stolen certificates.:
Lewis' attorney has subpoenaed a Miami Agent who interviewed Rebozo
I on three occasions. These interviews establish Rebozo's good faith
and disclosure of the contents of the interviews would not appear to
affect prosecution against the two remaining subjects in this casey
I(four subjects have pled guilty).
The Departmental Attorney Edward T. Joyce, Organized?
Crime and Racketeering Section, is in contact with Departmental.
Attorney Gary Is. Betz in Miami who is protecting the Government's.
interests in this subpoena. : Mr. Joyce advises he has suggested.to
