AsAC James Moreland, San Francisco, telephonically advised
this afternoon that the-acting United States Attorney (UsA) at San Francisco,
Richard Urdan, had requested representatives of our San Francisco Office
accompany him to Alcatraz Island to confront a group of Indians who had
taken possession of the island. Mr. Urdan was to requestthe Indians to
leave and, if they refused to do so, he wanted them forcibly removed.
ASAC Moreland stated last week 15 American Indians of various
tribes took over the island, which is administered by General Services
Administration (GsA). At the request of GSA, they left. Yesterday,
approximately 130 Indians went over to Alcatraz. GSA asked them to leave
and some did. The majority, however, have indicated they intend to stay
and hide out on the island. GsA has given them until noon today to leave
the island. The take-over of Alcatraz by the Indians last week and yesterday.
has been the subject of considerable publicity..
AsAC MoreIand advised that acting UsA Urdan has contacted the
San Francisco Office and advised that if the Indians did not leave at noon
today, San Francisco time, he planned to go over to Alcatraz and confront
the Indians, order them to leave, and in the event they refused, have them
to accompany him and, in the event his demands were not met, to assist in
the forcible removal of the Indians.

ACTION:
This appears to be a function of the United States Marshal's Office
rather than the FBI. ASAC Moreland, was advised that we should not accompany
the acting USA. . If-he wanted to go to Alcatkaz and demand that the Indians
Ieave, that was up to him, but we should not get involved either in the demands.
or the forcible ejeckion of the Indians from Alcatraz.
ASAC Moreland stated
he would so advise the acting USA..
