I was born March @, 1915 in Subeka, Minnesota. My father's neme was
Edward Erb Arnold; my mother's aelials name wis 3ertha E. Barden. I was 4
resident of Minnesota until I wes six yeers old when my family moved to
Scobey, Montana, where they homesteaded. My grandfather, Roland ©. Arnold
also homesteaded in Scobey, Vontana, and became quite prominent in political
circles along with 3urton K. Wheeler, the famous Montena senators
I went to grade school and high school at Minot, North Vakota. I
entered scouting at twelve yoars of age and achieved the rank of Eagle scout
before I was fourteen. fy former scout executive was ii. H. Prescott, now a
regional commissioner for the ‘oy Scouts in Kenses City, Kansas.
As a boy, I was interested in athletics and was selected es an all-
state end in 19352 and 1935 in the state of llorth Dakota. I entered the
8. Olympic trials in fency diving in 1932; I was a Red Cross Life Seving
Exeminer during the years of 1952, '33 and ‘34. I taught swimming and diving
at scout camps and the municipal pool in -‘inot, lhorth Yakote. I went to
University of Minnesota, where I swam end did fancy diving under Neils Thorpe,
and also played football under Bernie Jierman, but upon entering college I
was unable to continue my football career because of an injured knee. Wy
high school football coach was Glenn L. Jarrett, who is now the head football
coach of the University of North vakota. I had little or no finances, and
my ambition in furthering my education in college was ti p athletics.
As a boy in WMinot, liortl kota, I did a good deel of dog s i racing, placed
first with my dog in 1930 in the Lions Club Dog Derby.
