DETAILS: SAC John D. Glover, Atlanta Office, telephonically
advised at approximately 3:15 a.m., 6/4/81, that suspect
Wayne Bertram Williams was released from detainment. Williams
was being questioned as to his reasons for being on a bridge
above the Chattahoochee River during early morning hours of
5/22/81, after having reportedly dropped an object from the
bridge. Two Assistant U. S. Attorneys, Northern District of
Georgia, and Fulton County Prosecutor agreed they lack sufficient
probable cause to arrest Williams and, therefore, offered him
protective custody, which he refused.
A search of Williams's residence, car, and person was
conducted on 6/3/81, and the results furnrshéd to the Georgia
State Crime Laboratory. The results of ‘the evidence testing is
not presently known.
ody was found floating down Chattahoochee River on 5/24/81.
Atlanta Office will continue 24-hour physical and
electronic surveillance of Williams until he is eliminated as
a suspect.
