examinations have been completed and results reported, SA
become involved in preparations for the trial. Recently,
trial date was indefinitely postponed; however, the District
Attorney's Office anticipates a new trial dated in early November.
SA = is also working with representatives from
the West Poin epperell Company, General Motors Corporation
and Ford Motor Company concerning carpet from WILLIAMS’ bedroom
and two automobiles that WILLIAMS had access to. It appears
that the green carpet present throughout WILLIAMS' home was
manufactured by the West Point Pepperell Company and the Laboratory
is attempting to determine the amount of similar carpet that
was manufactured and sold in the Atlanta area. The Laboratory is
also attempting to determine the approximate number of cars in
the Atlanta area that contain carpet like that in two of WILLIAMS'
automobiles. In addition to fibers like those in WILLIAMS' bedroom
carpet, carpet fibers like those in the composition of
the interior carpet and/or the trunk carpet from two of WILLIAMS'
automobiles have also been recovered from a number of victims.

A preliminary Laboratory report dealing with SA
findings thus far in the Payne and Cater cases has been furnished
to the District Attorney's Office and subsequently to WILLIAMS'
attorneys. A copy of this report is attached. It is pointed
out that the fibrous evidence associating WILLIAMS and the two
victims (and associating the victims with each other) is significant,
considering that Payne was wearing only a pair of shorts and Cater
was naked when both bodies were recovered from the same general location
of the Chattahoocee River.
Some color differences were noted between nylon and acetate
fibers removed from Cater and Payne and similar fibers from WILLIAMS'
bedspread and carpet. These color differences have not been seen in
