This was a complex trial, lasting approximately eight weeks, and the guilty verdict was a result of circumstantial, rather than direct evidence. The Fulton County District Attorney and his staff handled this case in a most professional manner. It is recommended by the Atlanta Division that the following members of the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, Atlanta, Georgia, be considered for letters of commendation. It is realized that Slaton was recently orally commended by the _ Director for the excellent efforts of Slaton and his staff/in ~~. prosecuting Wayne Williams for the murders of Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne. The telephone call was appropriate and I’am sure Slaton will always cherish the thought that the Director oF the FBI singled him out for praise. é Mr. Slaton's staff also played an important role in the successful prosecution of Wayne Williams and it is believed that a rare opportunity exists to improve relations between the Fulton County Prosecutor's Office and the FBI that were strained to some extent during the investigation of the case.
