This play appears in the Second voluse of the collected works of BERTOLT BRECHT (BERTHOLD BRECHT, Gesamelte Werke, Band II), pages 329 to S63. This volume was published by the Malik- g Publishing Company, London W.C. 1, and was printed by HRIMRICK SOHN, Prag, Crechoslovakia. 7 According to this source, “The Disciplinary Measure is described = { as an “educational play" by its authors. It deals with the work of four t Communist agitators “ho go fran Moscow to biukden, Manchuria, to spread propa- ganda and support the Chinese Comunists emong the industries of }ukden. The action of the play takes place before the "Control Committes” whan the four agitators retum to give an account of their work and experience of the fast that they have been forced to kill a young Communist comrade whose intentions | were good but whose death was deemed a neceesity by ths four agitators since his activity threatened to endanger the Communist movement among the Chinese. In order to explain the position to the Control Cqmmittee, the four agitators reenact for that body their activity in Mukden. On the whole, the book advo- cates Communist world revolution by violent means. . \ This source reflects that a letter dated May 12, 1930, at Berlin, Germany, was published along with this pley. It ie signed by both HANNS EISLER and BERT BRECHT. It defends the play, explains the intention in writing it, objects to censorship before its presentation, and specifically calls it an educational play. It suggests that its presentation be removed from ell in- fluences. A complete translation of this play has previously been brought to the attention of the Bureau. SOURCE = -This source advised that in about 193] BERT SRECHT and HANNS EISLER were two-authora of « march known as the “Song of Solidarity” (Solidaritaets- Lied). ‘This march was adopted with the permission of BRECHT and BISLER as the song of the Comunist youth organizetion in Germany prior to Hitler's rise to power. Tt may be noted here that HANNS EISLER is known to this office as a German refugee writer and musician with comunistio tendencies, presestly = active with BRECHT in the Free German sovesent, which will be described later.
