ACTIVITIFS IN THE UNITED STATES, 1944 This source furnished information reflecting that as of January 1944 BERT BRECHT allowed the use of certain of his materia] to an unknown individual associated with HANNS SISLER. It was know to this informant that on January 18, 1944, an unidentified man discussed with “ISL®R « long distance telephone oall made to BEXT BRECHT in Hew York and advised EISLER that BRECHT had agreed to allow the use of certain materiel. It eppeared that EISLER and the iniden- tified man were planning some sort of stage production for which they would need $10,000. KLEMPFRERK, possibly OTTO KLEMF"RER, 1546 Calmar Court, was mentioned as having some connection with this matter. This source also furnished information that during January 1944, one of BRECHT's plays was apparently being rewritten by HANS ZISLoR, BERTHOLD VIBKTEL, and FRITZ KORTWEX. SEISLSK reaarked several times that the play was considered very good, true to life, and evidently pertinent to the ourrent political and social situation. It was believed that BRECHT had given tente- tive approval to the use of his material for the proposed play, although some agreement in written form would have to be arrived at later. It is possible that this relates to the matter mentioned in the previous paragraph. sono This source reflects that on January,}7, 1944, BERT 3RECET was re~ siding at the apartment of KUT BEKLAU and I CHANN, 124 Bast 57th Street, New York City. It appears that BRECHT has sublet a part of this apartment ever since his arrival in New York in November 1945. On January 17, 1944, socording to this source, GERHART’ZISLZK, an alleged Comintern agent and brother of HANNS BISLER, visited the apartment occupied by BRECHT and remained for approximately one hour and a quarter.
