There was no signature on this letter, however, it is believed fPom its contents to have been written - sy BERT BRECHT. ‘he letter is undated but it is believed that it was written sometime subsequent to September, 1944 inasmich as it makes reference to having WTH (RUTH BERIAU) do some photo;raphic copy work, This letter reads in part as follows: "I really would need your assistance, It is that I am trying my best on a didactical poem ia the style of WCRETIUS ' "DE RERUL RaTURA", dealing with something like the unnaturalness of conditions and relations in the bourgeois classes. The essential part of it will be the MANIFEST, which I am giving in the second and trird cantos. Od The first canto will deal with tne difficulties one finds trying to find oneself at home in tne nature of our society. The last canto will show the terriolo barbarism in its hideous growth. I an forwarding to you the second conto, which was the first I wrote, containing the first half of the Manifest. The third chapter of the Manifest, in which I criticize the present day socialistic literature, will be dealt with, cursorily, in my first canto. On behalf of the third canto (second chapter of the Mauifest) I an trying to work up the English text in catechism forn; I would like to have for it your ESSUNTLaL or PRINCIPaL POINTS too. (if you would send these to me, RUTH will guarantec that you get then back quickiy, even in a few days, as sne will make a photographic copy)...+.«Soms parts of the Manifest I hove chan ed a littis, as carcful as I could; I have the theory about VORSILEDUG (translator's notc: the t.cory that of a necessity the cupitalistic society must bring with itself a downward trend of wages till the border of ovon below the border of starvation) replaced with fConstitutionally conditioned jobiessness*,etc. you think I was right in doing thet? I think I was right in kvoping ss strict as possible to the text of the classical writcrs (translator's notes moaning MARX, EXGELS, the Communist ‘ianifest, otc.) but it might be better to choose somc freodom of expression in wording it. I think that tho Song is seadable cnouzh for public hearing, WEIGSL and KORTAGR (no doubt FRITZ'MORTHER) arc convinced of this..s.eseHow I am starting on the second part of the Manifest, This his tho quizzos as put by the classical authors (MARI, otc.). Could I smggle in some now quostions and answors, aad,if so, what qucstions? It might be uscful to add somo skotchus (in che spirit of thu onc I send you about "boing without a job"), if so what subjocts for skotchces or skits...” Source & advised that RUTH BSRIAU was in possossion of @ shest ef papsr containing cortain notcs undor the date Ostobcr 25, 1944, Those motes road as follows: % s a
