By Way of Introduction . ‘ “T wouLp Like to make a twofold dedication of this work: first to the memories of Edson Souto. Marco Antonio Bras de Carvalho, Nelson *). and so many other heroic fighters and A x . 2B José de Almeida (“EScoteiro urban guerrillas who fell at the hends of assassins of the Mihtary z Police, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force. and the DOPS.’ hated in- Struments of the repressive military dictatorship. ‘ Second. to the brave comrades — men and women - imprisoned in the medieval dungeons of the Brazilian Government and subjected fo tortures that even surpass the horrendous ¢rimes practiced by the azis. Like those comrades whose memory we revere, as well as those taken prisoner in battle, what we must do is fight Each comrade who opposes the military dictatorship and wants to * fight it can do something, however insignificant the task may scem . ve t urge all who read this mimmenuat and reach the conclusion that they cannot remain inactive. to-follow its instructions and jom the fight now. I do so because. under whatever hypothesis and in what- n ever circumstances. the duty of every revolutionary is to make the revolution. ‘. Another important problem is not merely to read the mnimanual , here and now, but to circulate us contents. This circulation will be possible if those who agree with sts ideas make mimeographed copies or print it in a pamphiei. though im this latter case, armed Struggle itself will be necesrary. . Finally. the reason that the present minimanual bears my signature. a is that the ideas expressed or systeratzed here reflect the personal expe- rience of a group of men engaged jn armed struggle in Brazil, among whom I have the honor to be included. So that certain individuals will haye no doubt about what this minimanual proclaims and can no , Jonger deny the facts or continue to state that the conditions for the struggle do not exist, it is necessary to assume responsibility for what is said and done. Hence anonymity becomes a problem in a work . such as this. The important fact is that there are patriots prepared to fight like prdinary soldiers. and ihe more there are the better. The accusaf:on of assault or terrcrism no lofger has the pejorative meaning it us¢d to have. It has acquired new clothing. a new colora- : tion. It doesfnot factionalize. it does not discredit; on the contrary it represents fi focal point of attract:on. Today to be an assailant or a terrorist is a quahiv that ennobies any honorable man because at is an act wasthy of wt revolutionary engaged in armed struggle against the shameful military dictatorship and its monstrosities. A Detinition of the Urban Guerrilia The chronic structural crisis charactensuc of Brazil today, and its resultant political instability, are what_have brought about the upsurge of revolutionary war in the country. The revolutionary war manifests itself in the form of urban guerrilla warfare, psychological warfare. 1 Department of Public snd Social Order.
