Dr. Eberle further stated that he questioned this woman about how she happened to receive the burns and she stated « gasoline camp stove had exploded while they were staying in & camp ground in Illinois six weeks before. Dr. Eberle also stated that during the time he was bandaging the wamin, he asked her her name and where she was from; that she started to say something when one of the other women put her hand over her mouth. Dr. Eberle became suspicious of these parties from this action and was planning on notifying the Sheriff on gis return but overlooked doing so. He further stated that he noticed a tattoo of a heart and an arrow with the name of Roy or Ray underneath on the burned woman's right thigh. He also stated that this womin had a recent cut on her chin of about 1; inches long and thet the wurns were not over two weeks old. He advised thet he was paid by & man, whose photo he identified as Clyde Barrow, and that this mn had @ broken nose as if it had been done in a recent accident. Agent was unable to interview Mrs. Harry Rogers, the woman who was attacked end raped at her home at Winslow, Arkansas. Mrs. Rogers is at present confined in the General Hospital, Fort Smith, in s serious condition end Agent was advised by Dr. Everett Stevenson, attending physician, that an interview at the present time might be fatal to her as she is in a very hysterical condition and suffering from internal injuries. Sheriff John 5. Williams, Fort Smith, arkansas, stated that he had not- ified all hospitals end doctors to be on the lookout for « woman answering the description of the burned woman, Sheriff A. D. Maxey, Van Buren, Arkansas, stated that on the late after- noon of June 23, 1935 he received « call from the Fayetteville Police to be on the lookout for two men in a Ford V-8 Coach with an Indiana license; that they had held up a store in thet city; that he notified his deputy sheriff at Alma, Mr. A. Ne Salyer, and town marshal Humphrey of Alm to be on the lookout for them; that Salyer and Humphrey drove out on way toward Fayetteville and that about three miles north of Alm they encountered two men in this V-8 Ford where they had had an eccident and smshed the car; that as soon as the officers approached this ear and stopped, the two men in the car opened fire with shotguns end killed Humphrey; that Salyer got out of his car end jumped into a ditch for protection as the two men ran and jumped into Salyer's car and drove off, Salyer firing his rifle at the fleeing car; that later that evening these two men abandoned Salyer's car about two or three miles north of Van Buren and held up « Mr. and Mrs. Mark Loftin of Fort Smith, who were driving on the highway, and took their car away fram them; that this car was later found abandoned at Montevista, two miles south of Van Buren; that on June 24, 1955 these Jat aim abehehal, 95 SHUR & Sek Tae ee ee of Mes, Harry Rogers, two miles south of Winslow, Arkansas; thet Mrs. Rogers, who wes alone at her home at the time, refused to give them the keys to this car whereupon both men brutually beat her with a chain and then reped her.
