Rosen Apes ei Holmes ——oe ene ry Gandy SUBJECT: UNKNOWN SUBJECTS BOMBING OF SIXTEENTH aa STREET BAPTIST CHURCH ‘Oo aN BIRWINGHAM, ALABAMA Ber pb cir SEPTEMBER 15, 1963 pe RENT BOMBING MATTERS ao Our investigation of the bombing oftheSixteenth Street Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama, on 9-15-63, is being pressed vigorously by the special squad of Agents who were rushed to Birmingham as well as by our other Divisions, " Interviews of known Klan and hate group members and bombing” Suspects are continuing on a preferred basis and approximately 110 such, interviews of Klansmen and members of hate organizations, including officers of such groups, were conducted 9~20-63. With respect to the activities oe, Qa Birminghan Klansman, who on the day of the the seat covers in his car, removing a set of covers with an orange substance thought possibly to be residue from a safety fuse (wax-like), the Laboratory has determined the stain consisted of enamel chips rather than wax. The wires from windows, wood from window frame, drapery fragments and metal frame from window, scrapings from window sill obtained at the scene of the bombing were examined by the Laboratory but the examination disclosed no foreign residues or fragments pertinent to the investigation, —_— Twenty-nine additional individuals residing in the neighborhood of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, Birmin were int: don the basis of which a’ as located as a possible witness. 1 Mohr 27!
