He told me that he feels that this situation will probably backfire on the state authorities for having picked up Chambliss anc Cagle. This appears to be true for as yet no charges have been file against either and they are being held on an open charge of investig tion. Ae He pointed out that yesterday Robert elton of the Klan had been riding around in a state police car most of the day. Shelton is outspoken in his support of Governor Wallace and is the most voca of the Klan leaders in the area. SAC Moore is of the opinion that the state authorities obviously knew that we had been putting tremendous pressure on the Chambliss group. Obviously the word got back to Shelton's crowd and they apparently felt they had to jump in and beat the Federal € authorities to it by taking some action. It is possible that this will backfire and that these people /may be subjected to a law suit.
