This is to advise of the receipt of a copy of a letter to
Senator John ‘kman (Democrat - Alabama) dated 4/29/68 from
4:2 Emmet b Jomenicael Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry,
L “University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham, Alabama, In his
cn letter, Carmichael requested the release of facts regarding instant
4 case, stating he believes the Government knows who is guilty and
2 feels the name or names of such persons should be released, whether
those persons are white or Negro.

Instant case involves the bombing of the Sixteenth Street
Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama, on 9/15/63. Four young
Negro girls were killed, 16 other persons were injuries, and damage
to the church amounted to approximately $30,000. A full investigation
was immediately instituted and that investigation identified a small y

i was prejudiced by premature arrests made by the Alabama Highway
Patrol on 9/20/63 and 10/1/63, when Chambliss, Cagle and Hall

Highway Patrol,
me All logical leads in above investigation have been covered
and recovered and the entire investigation has been reviewed at various
times by the field, Bureau supervisors and Bureau officials to
insure that all logical avenues of investigation have been thoroughly
pursued, Investigation is continuing in an effort to develop admissible
evidence which would warrant Federal prosecution; this is being dene
by working through sources and informants who are in close contact
