Chambliss and Charles ArnieG4gle allegedly in connection with the recent 4 “bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, On 9/30/63 the Director brought this matter to the attention of the Attorney General, He pointed out that . information had been received that the Alabama Highway Patrol had very little substantial evidence regarding the two individuals. There is attached for your information a copy of a memorandum prepared for the Attorney General by Burke Marshall, Assistant Attorney General of the ivil Ri ivision, under 10/4/63. noted the Bureau had received similar information to the effect on no basis for arresting Chambliss and Cagle except that he found out BI was questioning numerous Klan members and wanted to jump the gun and therefore picked them up. As a matter of fact, it was more than 48 hours < {later that there was any indication as to what they were going to be charged with SY and they finally came up with the possession of dynamite charge.
