The country is suffering from, both, an attack of neurotic selfishness among the Ipoputation at large and an acceleration of crime. Many people are fond of pointing this out ‘but few point toward the country's leadership as the source of these trends. Moreover, some ‘thirty years ago I met a member of the Mafia who stated very emphatically that much more ied was illegally exchanged at government levels than in all of the country's professional criminal ventures. Since government officials are in a position to cover up most of their illicit out havioral \behavior it is not difficult to believe in the ice berg theory. What I would hav, ‘political power seekers as a group would take some space but it is obvious ‘scientists that political, criminal, and selfish intent overlap considerablyf I believe that the initiative which the FBI took in the sting operati [penavior in politics, will give heart to that population sector which is not Micitly j |, and +may start a process toward healing the nation's selfish/criminal illness. 5 1 I hope that the initiative taken by the FBI in this small group of singularities‘wi ‘into an ongoing program of determination, strength, and vigor. Although the acts whi FBI will be bringing to prosecution are easy to prove there are many criminal malfdd andes in ‘government which are of enormous collective impact. They may presently be difficult to prove ‘under criminal statute but even their exposure is valuable. Perhaps, also, the FBI Ww bepible ‘to develop methods by which many acts of criminal malfeasance can be prosecuted. <p ' I thank you in a personal sense also.
