You must be receiving your feed- back from your own staff! That is not my opinion or the opinion of, I believe, the majority of us mid-westerners. As a matter of fact, I have yet to speak to anyone in my sizeable circle of acquaintances, who supports the FBI's amoral, if not illegal, Abscam activities. I hasten to add, however, that this is not in defense of shady Congressmen! Rather, it is simply to point out what should be a fairly obvious fact. That the proper and in- tended role of the Federal Bureau of Investigation should be exactly what its name implies - the investigation of federal crimes, not manufacturing crimes in order to entrap citizens! As I have indicated to my three Congressional representatives via a copy of this letter, if you actually do entertain the mistaken asumption that Abscam was a proper function of your organization; then, perhaps, we should change the FBI lo ———— prams to FBMCE (Federal Bureau of Manufactured Crimes Entrapment )!
