United States District Judge Villiam|Clark telephoned Newark, New Jersey, and said that he would like to know if thi any investigators in Newark with respect to the criue situation resulting from the killing of Dutch}Schultz. I told him that ue were looking into the netter to ceteruine if there are any violations within our investigetiv jurisdiction. He seid that "Newark hes been a little bit neglected by the Depertnent, end the result of that is that these gangsters heve now all comeover here (Newark), and I think you ought to have some special people put in here because all of the local men ere tied up with politics, end all of the gangsters in here heve violated the income tax laws, which woul¢c give the Bureau jurisdiction". I pointed out to Judge Clerk that income tax matters are not rithin the investigative jurisdiction of this Bureau, the seme being handled by the Treasury Departuent. Judge Clerk said that he believed this Bureau ought to cive them some help. He said that some time ago, the Treasury people had someone interview him relative to these income tex matters, but since thet time "they hsve done absolutely nothin; ebout it", this being in March of this yecr.
