MEMOR/NDU. FOR THE DIRECTOR
Ret prfae situation in
everk, New Jersey.
United States District Judge Villiam|Clark telephoned
Newark, New Jersey, and said that he would like to know if thi
any investigators in Newark with respect to the criue situation resulting
from the killing of Dutch}Schultz. I told him that ue were looking into
the netter to ceteruine if there are any violations within our investigetiv
jurisdiction. He seid that "Newark hes been a little bit neglected by the
Depertnent, end the result of that is that these gangsters heve now all
comeover here (Newark), and I think you ought to have some special people
put in here because all of the local men ere tied up with politics, end
all of the gangsters in here heve violated the income tax laws, which woul¢c
give the Bureau jurisdiction".
I pointed out to Judge Clerk that income tax matters are not rithin
the investigative jurisdiction of this Bureau, the seme being handled by the
Treasury Departuent. Judge Clerk said that he believed this Bureau ought to
cive them some help. He said that some time ago, the Treasury people had
someone interview him relative to these income tex matters, but since thet
time "they hsve done absolutely nothin; ebout it", this being in March of
this yecr. Judge Clerk egain seid thet he believed we ought to send some
special investigators in there, strting thet the local police force is very
poor, and it eppeered to him thet the Treasury > Iba -3h085~ 1X
