TELEPHONE CONVERSATION BETWEEN MR, RUGHES AND
MR. FAY, ACTING AGENT IN CHARGE OF THE CHICAGO
OFFICE, ON OCTOBER 17, 1930,
"Mr. Oseas and Mr. Irrgang had quite a conference
soncerning the juice grape matter. Mr. DiLillo is
going into the grape business. He is to bid for a car-
load of grapes and the carload will be knocked down to
him, after which he is to go to the Northwestern Terminal
and endeavor to dispose of thet carload of grapes. [ asked
Mr. Oseas how the arrangements could be carried out to buy
these grapes and he said he would teke that up with you
tomorrow when he gets to Washington. ‘The carload of grapes
will cost $1,000.00. Mr. Oseas stated he thought it would
be better for agent Dililio to associate himself with a am
in the grape business and request him to bid for the carload,
even though it might be necessary to pay him a $15.00 or $25.00
commission, after which DiLillo can go dom to the track himself
end sell the grapes."
"How are the grepes to be purchased?”
"I imagine in cash."
"I think by check would be better.”
"The only thing is, Mr, Bughes, that Be may buy through a
second party.”
"Yes, I understand the check proposition. Well, of courss,
that check could be taken to the bank and exchanged for a
cashier's check.”
"Mr. Oseas wants DiLillo to do nothing so far as going into
the actual business is concerned until Monday. ‘That will
give you an opportunity to talk to Oseas. I thought I would
give you this in the meantime.”
"Iam glad you did.*
"In the meantime Dilillo is going out and familiarizing
himself with the grape business in general, so that when
he goes into it he will mow something about it.*
"I will get in touch with Oseas and will call you up afterward."
