October 50, 1950 MEMORANDUM TO ACTING SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE ¥. X, FAY Re; TONY ROMANO; MANNY SCHRAIBERG JUICE GRAPE INVESTIGATION At 11:30 A. M. on this date Agents conferred with Mr, Charles W. Irrgang at his office, 169 South Water Market, Mr. Irrgang stated thet at 7:30 P. M. on October 29, 1930 Subject Manny Schraiberg called at Mr. Irrgang's apartment at the Medinah Athletic Club and was ac- companied by two men whom Schraiberg introduced as Benny,Byrne or Byrnes and Mickey Sex or Saxson. after Schraiberg had mde certain that Mr? Irr- gang's epartment Was occupied only by Mr. Irrgang and his wife, he stated that the two men with him were his financial backers, and that it be under- stood that they were "big shote” in the “organization”, meaning the Al {Sarore organization. The man nemed Byrne or Byrnes undertook to act as spokes- min and atated flatly to Mr. Irrgang thet their purpose in coming to see him was to work out some errengement in regard to marketing of juice grapes in the various terminals so that the “organization” and the auction company could both profit by such arrangement. Byrnes stated, according to Mr. Irr- @eng, thet bo sos in posscssion of records which the Capone organization had obtained in a raid on the former headquarters of Joe \jiello and his gang on North Michigan Avenue, which records showed that up November 1, 1929 Joe eferrere hed aid in to the Aiello orgenization a net profit of $43,500.00, end that the records further indicated that for the entire juice grape ship- ping season of 1929 a total of between $100,000.00 and $110,000.00 hed been peid in as profits by Ferrara to Aiello. Byrnes stated that the organization, believing that Subject Schraiberg was entirely familiar with the juice grape situetion, and based upon bis representation that large profits were to be obtained in this "racket", had placed the sum of $100,000.00 in a loop bank to be used to finance the juice grape racket for the season of 1930 but that to date Schraiberg hed been @ble to ahow but a small profit to the great Ccisappoint- ment of the Capone gang, and that it was for this reason in particular, thet is, to effect some plan whereby lerger profits could to guaranteed to the Capone organization, that Byrnes, Schraiberg ard Sax had called upon Mr, Irrgang. ‘The lest named stated that Byrnes requested Irrgang to suggest a plan whereby the organization end Irrgang could both reep @ profit from the sale of juice grapes in the Chicago tercinale, and Byrnes stated to Irrgang that for a consideration he was prepared to guarantee that his organi zation would force every peddler ongaged in the sale of juice grapes in the Chicago | COPIES DESTROYED i 120 JUL 27 sve 62-2YW/S 3-37 ( f
