EDGAR HOOVER Vos Od BL. S. Bepartment of Justire aac Buskingion, B.C. October 11, 1933. MEMORANDUA FOR THE DIRECTOR. With reference to the investigation of a letter, allegedly written by Alphonse Capone as described in the attached memorandum prepared by Supervisor Stapleton under date of Septenber 27, 1933, I desire to advise that it appears the case originated with a letter received from the Birmingham office under date of June 16th. The matter was referred to the Director, Bureau of Prisons, on June 23rd, and on June 27th the Birmingham office was authorized to proceed with an investigation. Inasmuch as the authorization wae merely in response to a request of the Birmingham office, apparently no tickler was meinteined. . Horever, on July 6th an additional letter was sent to the Birmingham , office with reference to the cases The report subuitted by the Birming~ ham office is dated September Sth and the investigation covers the period June 14th to @lst, July Ist, Aucust 2nd, lth, and 20th, and —_ Seotenber 2, 1933. The delay was in the Birmingham office and possibly could be sccounted for by reason of the many emergency matters confronting — that office during that period and in view of the fact that it was not indicted at eny time that this particuler investigation was of an — emergency character. If you desire, an e propriate letter will be directed to the [fee aeses office, callin; ettention to the delay and instru, the matter be imnediately completed. Te NTO Ma jee ACT 19 1933.
