C, Dear Sirt eee 2074 Reference is made to a letter fran Ue 3plrema to this Division under date of Decenber 1, 1937 which sets forth information regarding a telegram received by the Bureau that was sent from Midland, Texas on November 23, 1937 and signed Lr creel This telegram requested information as to "Full status of Al Caponds terms", advised that Special Agent E. C, Dorris contacted. (iy Micland, Te; was advised as follows: He, and another individual caine ill local bartender, were both drunk at the time this telegram to the ‘eau was sent. They got into an argue ment over the sentence which was imposed on Capone at the time of his conviction. advising he at first thought such sentence to be ten years and then later decided it was ten on one count an additional year on another count, sentences to run consecutively, er advised he and his friend then put up a small bet (&.00 he believes) and then came a discussion of how they were to prove who was right, advised he then conceived the idea of wiring the Bureau to secure Ss ormation and accordingly did so, his idea being that if he were right he would endeavor to get a larger wager if he could borrow the money. then went to the Western Union office to send the telegram but found sell too di word the message as he desired and so secured the assistance of local Western Union office. He did not receive any answer to his query. Capone or has any connection with also contac sending the telegram in question as he He likewise advised that as he rec. this message. - local inquiries produced information thet considers himself as an oil premotor but actually is little more than a bum. The local welfare orgam izations are ofent called on to furnish groceries for his family and donations are made up by local citizens on other occasions, He, apparently, is a heavy drinker and stays drunk for as long as he can secure whiskey to drink, He is sometimes sucessful making small deals and usually spends all the money made on whiskey.
