CO NTY JAIL; CONTR PT OF COURT, which relates to alleged privileges pr nted Alphonse™Japone, an inmate of the Cook County Oe Jail. It will »e noted th.t the inquiry in question was conducted in 4 manner surrested by United States Attorney Johnson, who wes very enxious to preclude the possibility of any newsprper publicity. Notwithstanding this fact, the newspspers received information regarding the investigetion, copies of which newspaper articles have been forwaréed to the Bureau. Yesterdey afternoon I again conferred with Mr. Johnson with a view to deteri{ning whether any additional investigation wes desired, inss:uch as the in uiry had been mede public through the nevsp.pers, br. Johnson expressed the op :nion that he did not believe edditional investiertion werrented, and accordingly, no further action need be taxen. Notwithstanding this decision of the United Stetes Attorney which was a reiteretion of the opinion quoted in the report alluded to above, I am holding this case . open for a period of thirty days with a view to reporting any possible developments.
