Fron 1934 to 19385 he lectured in history at Printty College, Cambridge, England. From 1935 to 1922 he was vith the British Broadcas ting Company engaged in anti-Nazt propaganda work. From 1939 to was employed by the sritish Intelligence organization From 1941 to 1944 he was again with the British Broadcasting Company. Fron 1944 +0 1946 he had a temporary appointment in the News Depart ent of the Foreign Office in London and was thereafter enploved in the private office of the Vinister of State, ‘Hector MacWNeil, until 1948. le then worked from 1948 to 1950 in the Far posters Department of the Foreign Office, and in August, 1950, was transferred to the British Embassy in hashington, D. C. in the Far Eastern Affairs Depa tment. lie left the United States on transfer back to England on }ay 1, 1951. After his return he was called before a board and i .forned that all chances for Jurther pronotion in the British Foreign Service were over. This is reportedly tantanount to Cismissal procedure, 8urgess’ recall from the United States grew out of a letter dated March 14, 1251, from Governor Battle of Virginia to the Chief of Protocol of the State Department. In this letter Governor 3attle called attention to the fact that during March 1951, Tuy Burgess and an individual by the nane 0 sedmeamesmnaetae: had been arrested and brought before Judge Binford on a charge of reckless driving. Burgess claimed diplonatic immunity for himself and the driver, reportedly even going so far as to threaten the arresting officer in the event tire case was prosecuted. The individual with whom Burgess was traveling, has heen interviewed.
