0-19 (7-8-55) Goday in Washington Need for Security Shown - By Maclean-Burgess Case ~ By DAVID LAWRENCE WASHINGTON, Sept. 19.—It’s the same old story—inade-. quate laws and inadequate security measures to protect a nation| : against Communist agents and thelr dupes—whieh now startles the world as the facts come to light about the penetration made by Soviet spics into the British Foreign Office and the Australian Foreign Office. For, just as Aiger Hiss transmitted se- ts from the United States Department of) . so did high offielals in the British} reign Office give them to Soviet agents.: ‘Security risks” who should long before have’ been invesigated were not carefully exam- ined. Possibly it was because the atmosphere was poisoned by the specious claim that in- dividual rights. are sacrosanct—as if any individual rights could ever supersede the right of the state to protect itself against subversion, sabotage or treason. now is definitely established that Di # ald Maciean—who, up to May 25, 19 cupied” the American desk in the British Foreign Office~-was a-Soviet spy and month after month transmitted secret papors to the : Soviet Embassy. . Guy Burgess, who fied with Maclean to Moscow, was a sec ond sécretary in the Brilish Embassy in Washington and during his stay here had a twenty-four-hour pass to the offices of the Atomic Energy Commission. He was secretary of an international committee of diplomats which dealt with atomic-ererey infor- mation. —<—— Lawreace a Mr. Tolson Mr. Boar, man, 6442 Me.
