_M R. HAROLD MACMILLAN, the Foreign Secretary, told
M.P.s_ debating the Maclean-Burgess case fast ‘night om
hat 900 Foreign Office officials have been checked for

"Mr. Macmillan also disclosed that in the
last 10 years 59 officials have been compulsoril
retired for “incompetence.”
So, he said, the Foreign Office is nol “|

The new system ot checks since 1951, he said—it’
applies to all Government departments’ in which
security is involved—“ has enormously strengthened the |
security system.” And he refused a general inquiry ,

Mr. Herbert Morrison appealed to the Prime
Minister to overrule this. “There is a case for an
inquiry,” he said, “and inquiry there must be.”
