That any mystery shoud
surround Mr. Philby's where-
abouls is indeed an astonishing
coincidence. .
For of the many ple whose
lives were shattered bp the dix-
appearance of Burgess and
Maclean back In 1951, perhaps
no one—oulside their immediate
famiies—suffered more than
Philby did.
In those days
he was First
Secretary at the British Embassy
in Wasihngwn and the senior
oficial of our counter-espionage
staff there.
He served in the Embassy -
fron October 1949 until June
