an individual who claims to know the identity of a third man involved
in the urgess-MacLean case and to have the full story, According to
“Saati. th: name of this thitd party is a British subject named
' Philby, who was formerly connected with the British Government in
this country. | iy!
1 adviscd ime that he opparently was on the trail
of some very hot information but cautioned him that in the White Paper
which had just been released by the British Government there vas no
taeation of Philby's name, apparently becruse of lack of direct proof
agrinst Philby and the fect that Philby was in contact with lawyers and
threatening heavy libel suits if any paper prints his name in connection
with this matter. I told @Miuimgma.that he should caution hia friend
regarding the possibility of libel action unless he can get a release on the
whole story because otherwise he can become involved in legal difficulties.
1 also mentioned that I believed Philby's name was kuown to oue or two
newspapers in London but they have been reluctant to use it because of
lack of direct proof.
