United States Army, eadquarters,
United States Army Alaska, informed me that His Eminence
FRANCIS CARDINAL SPELLMAN visited Alaska during the latter
part of December, 1957, following which he departed en route
Tokyo arriving there on December 22, 1957. While in Alaska
the Cardinal, as a result of weather conditions, was
obliged to limit his visit to Anchorage, Fairbanks, and -¢
some points of interest to him in both of these cities.
aon itpined:
: Following his arrival in Tokyo he notified
gong local chaplains by telegram that he had lost his Pectoral
: Cross somewhere on his journey. A search of winter clothing
5 used by him as well as quarters occupied failed to reflect
° presence of the cross and it is presumed that it may
have been lost somehwere in Alaska. _
I have informed the Agents of this office con-

at Anchorage and Fairba: after I had c
specifically inquired of as to whether sree? |
he thought the gardinal wou. interpose any objection to

that there would be fio objection but that such action would
