During his Abwhr activities in Portugal from 1 a
to 19%5, Paul Fidremuc, although working as an independent - i
agent for Abwhr HQ Berlin, maintained close contact with the -
Chief of KO Portugal Obst. Lt. Von Karsthoff, frequently
assisting him in an advisory capacity. Fidremuc was interested
in obtaining reliable intelligence from the United States to
substantiate or to elaborate on the report of his agents in
England and the Near East. Von Karsthoff obliged him by
showing him or discussing with him the reports of his agent in
the United States, whose name, as Fidremuc found out in the -
course of his discussions, was Kaul. On
While interned in CIE 76 United States Zone of
Germany in the Spring of 1946, Fidremuc made the acquaintance
of a Dr. Kaul, a fellow internee, whom Fidremuc, from informa=
tion learned in the course of conversation him, suspected
to be identical with the Abwhr agent Kaul. Vd
During their conversations Dr. Kaul told Fidremuc
and others that the Gestapo had furnished him with dollars to
live for sometime in Costa Rica. He further stated that he
had excellent connections with Professor Einstein and his
laboratory. He had in his possession a letter signed by
Professor Einstein and addressed to the American authorities
