forwarded to the Bureau newspaper articles written by Tr
Walter Orr Reherts which appeared in the "Denver Post".
Included in this material was an article captioned "Armies
and Oceans Offer Jittle Sceurity in Atomic Age--FPobert.
This article stated in part that Dr. Altert
Einstein, ene of the great scientists of our age tells ur
in effect that 9 state of emergency exists; further that in
a Tecent message he said "a new type of thinking is essertial
if mankind is to survive and move to higher levels" Tre
article stated further that Dr. Einstein had arreed “te bead
up the "Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists" to ris
a fund of 200,090 to sponsor a great national campaign oor
public education on the violent issues cf atomic enerey.
this article stated further that Dr. Binstein expleined
why he and the other scientists had acted to raise a isrge funi to
meet the 'rresent crisis;" further that he said "as se‘entists
who work in the interests of our country at a time of mations!
peril, and vho rresided zt the birth of the atomte age, we hae
this overv.helming responsibility to mankind. As citizens, w?
saw thet the people were wholly unawsere of the supreme impli-
cations of this new nour, mainly because of the necessities of
military security. We are not men of action,.the consiferation
of these f-ctors forced us out cf inaction."
Under the sub-heading "Speak Pravely, S:ys Einstein"
this article stated further that Dr. Einstein had specifically
ppealed for finsneial aid; further that mcney could be sent

from $1 to #10,000 had been sent in to Dr. Binst+ ins together
with Dr. Einstein on the Emergency Committee for leading
Selentists of the Atomic Energy Field was Dr. Hans Retle, Dr.
Edward Coron, fr. Leo Szilard and Dr. Hereld Urey.
This article stated further that Dr. Einstein wrote
"Selence has broucht forth this danger but the real pretlem is
infthe minds snd hearts of ren. We will not change the hearts
off other men by mechanisms, but by chanring our hearts and
srPakinz bravely. When we sre clear in our heart and mind-onlky
then shall ue find courage to surmount the fear which haunts jhe
world."
