13 4. The Bureau received an ONI report from the Chief of
Naval Intelligence dated February 10, 1948, entitled "Subversive
Trends of Current Interest". On page l of this rerort appeared
the heading "Committee of 1,000" Under this heading it was
stated that Dr. Harlow Shapley of Harvard University had en-
nounced plans to recruit 1,000 prominent Americans behind
their drive to abolish the House Un-American Committee as
"Betrayers of American dideals;" reportedly, this committee
was backed by such people as Alpert Einstein, Archibald Mae-
Leish and cthers; further that it was noteworthy thet irchi-
hald Macleish was currently representing the United States in
a diplomstic caracity; that Einstein was one of the chief
pronenents of the Soviet inspire? proparania of fear.
