NY 92-657 ATU file 3310-M contained a report dated November 26, 1934, wherein it was stated "Since the coming of prohibition, there has been in the City of New York and vicinity and extending into the State of New Jersey a notorious, daring group of boot- leggers known as the GAMBINO outfit. The principal members of this outfit are: CARLO GAMBINO, his brother PAUL GAMBINO, and their cousin ANTHONY GAMBINO," The file contained a report dated November 21, 1935, reflecting that the Newark Police on May 22, 1933, found at 21 Coyes Place, Newarx, New Jersey, two large storage tanks filled with pure alcohol, together with a large quantity of five gallon cans. The seizure was turned over to Federal authorities and while some Prohibition Agents were engaged in taking an inventory, they were held-up by 14 men who took their guns and drove away with a van load of five gallon cans of pure alcohol. The report stated that "this was a GAMBINO'drop'." The file contained information of an investigation extending over a period of two years, which had for its purpose the assessment and collection of unpaid taxes, amounting to about $8,000,000 owed to the US by a nation-wide alcohol ring in which the GAMBINO outfit played a prominent part. According to the file, the case was expected to come up in US District Court, Newark, New Jersey. -~ 42 -
