Mitchell announced. FBi Director J. Edgar Hoover stated that the arrest culminated an extensive investigation by the FBI. Specifically, Gambino was charged with conspiracy to violate provisions of the Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property statute by conspiring to \e | rob the crew of an armored truck operated by the United States Trucking Company in New York City. ; Mr. Hoover noted that Gambino, aged 67, a resident of Brooklyn, New York, has been publicly described as having recently taken over the gangland reins formerly held by La Cosa Nostra chieftain Vito Genovese, who died last year in a Federal prison. Gambino has also been publicly described as the most powerful member of the nine-man National Commission which controls La Cosa Nostra activities on a nationwide basis. | : Mr. Hoover said that Gambino will be arraigned as soon as possible.
