He said there are many conflicting stories printed concerning.the manner in which the escapees made their break from Alcatraz, be whether 4, 5 or 10 persons were involved initially, whether disciplinary action will be taken against the prison authorities, and what the authorities now believe should be done néxt, and in general what progress is being made in determining whether the escapees are alive. mom eter VY Guthman said he has been successful in stalling off the news media men by telling reporters that if disciplinary action is warranted it will, of course, be taken. He said he thinks now ts the time to give out the full story of just how the break was accomplished, exactly how long it was planned, the details of the escape, ¢ how many were involved and then simply state the FBI is continuing its investigation to locate the men. Guthman said he did not believe any statement should-be made if 4 it would impede the FBI's investigation but that he strongly believed something (a | | would have to be said sooner or later and now appeared to i a good time to do it, ‘. Wick told Guthman there hagbeen too much talking already, that g FBI's job is directed toward the location of these men and their apprehension and our investigation does not go to the matter of security at the prison, that we are ¢ £ | not investigating that aspect.
